Welcome to Frequently Asked Questions about Central Presbyterian Church. We hope this page will give you a better insight into who we are and what we are about. If you have a question that is not addressed here, please contact our pastor.

1. How do we find Central?

A: We are located at 309 South Church St, just south of First Baptist Church and across the street from Holy Cross Episcopal Church. Click here for a map.

2. What “kind” of a Presbyterian Church is Central?

A: Central Presbyterian is a church of the Presbyterian Church (USA). We are the largest and oldest Presbyterian denomination in North America. Click here to go to the denominations website
and here for a link to Presbyterian distinctive beliefs.

3. What can I expect to happen in a worship service?

A: We follow a traditional order of worship which includes hymns, responsive readings, Scripture readings, prayers, sharing joys and concerns, a children’s message, and a sermon. We sing hymns from the 1990 Presbyterian Hymnal and the 2003 supplement "Sing the Faith," which includes traditional, contemporary and global music.  Here is a sample of a recent bulletin (although it looks better in Word than in web format!).

4. When are worship services and how long do they last?

A: Worship begins at 10:30 a.m. and lasts a little more than an hour.  On August 13, 2006 worship time will move to 10:45 a.m.

5. How old is the minister and how was he trained?

A: Our pastor is the Reverend Dr. Timothy R. Davenport-Herbst, whom people call “Tim” or “Pastor Tim.” He was born in 1971.  He received a Bachelor of Arts, magna cum laude, with departmental honors in Religious Studies from Presbyterian-related Alma College in Alma, Michigan. He received a Master of Divinity degree from Louisville Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Louisville, Kentucky. Tim received a Doctor of Ministry degree from Perkins Seminary at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, in 2002.

6. What do you have for children and youth?

A: Every Sunday, there is a children's sermon.  Starting August 13, 2006 we will have a new Sunday School program for all ages starting at 10 a.m.  The Sunday School for children and youth follows the lectionary lesson for that week from the Bible, which is usually what our pastor preaches.  There are several classes for adults.  At 9:30, a class led by Homer Thornton meets in the Record Room and studies "The Hard Sayings of Jesus" by F.F. Bruce.  At the same time, another class led by Mozelle Rice meets in the Mary Baker classroom and studies the Presbyterian curriculum, " The Present Word."  At 10 a.m. an adult class meets in Fellowship Hall for discussion on various topics.  This class is led by Sally and Darrell Bruce and is especially for parents of children in Sunday School.

Presbyterian Youth Connection meets every Sunday night at 5:30 p.m. during the school year.  Jared Davis, Darrell Bruce and the pastor lead the youth group.  Each year they have games and recreation, times of fellowship and support, Bible study, discussion on current topics, and mission activities.  We support Summer camps for all ages and our students are attending at least 3 different Presbyterian camps this Summer.

Bible Zone Live is a new Wednesday program this Fall for all ages.  Beginning on Wednesday, September 6 at 5:30 p.m. we will serve dinner, sing songs and break into classes until 7 p.m.  The children will use the Bible Zone Live! curriculum.  The youth will discuss current events using linC.  And adults will discuss the previous Sunday's scripture passage on which our pastor preached in more depth.

We also provide a nursery for all church events, including worship.   Our workers undergo background checks, having training in first aid and CPR,  and love children.

7. What do people wear to worship?

A: Whatever feels most comfortable and worshipful to them. On any given Sunday, you will see men with coats and ties and without them. Women wear dresses and slacks. In the summer, some people have even been known to wear shorts!

8. How do I become a member?

A: Members are received after meeting with the pastor and session (our local governing body). Members can be received upon profession of faith, reaffirmation of faith or transfer of church letter. Anyone who has been baptized in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit with water, whether as an adult or child, is not re-baptized.

9. How can find out more about Central?
